I like the other one better as well. I think I know why though - the black building on the far left is a big distraction, so much so that I stop looking at everything else to figure out what it is. If you cropped the building out and left the sky on the left I think it would make it the best of both worlds.
I disagree that you "blew" it - Thats the way the sky looks on winter days early and late in the day.
I think the blue shadows and dark silhouettes work very well to convey a mood of quiet stillness and low temperatures. The fence leads us from the left to the right and then we continue on up the tree which then points us back towards the left where we fall upon the hay buns, from there it's back to the fence. This visual spiral is what makes the image work so well.
There are a few things I personally would "add" to the image to enhance it even further but they are more a signature style that I do and it would be inappropriate to suggest an artistic style to another artist.
