I didn't actually mean for you to crop it out. The original un-cropped has more balance and gives the wires grounding. What I meant by a higher angle was that the grass would still be there but you could see it graduate towards the towers instead of cut them off at the base.
I think Kurt his the nail on the head with the snow, you do need something dark for the snow to contrast against. When that happens you then have to watch as the snow will through the AF off on the lens. I think you did very well with both shots in way less than 'good' shooting conditions.

The only suggestion I have, ginger, is that the sky might just be too bright to get the snow detail you want regardless of camera settings. But I haven't shot alot of blizzards so I may be wrong :) I'm wondering if recomposing so that you have more dark background (like the trees and ground) dominating the scene would have helped?
